Bio

My name is Deanne Thomas.

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Special Education from Troy University in 1985.

I began my career at Project Independence School in New Brockton, Alabama.  This school served students with multi-handicaps from Coffee County.  Project Independence eventually merged with the three  Coffee County schools.  I continued teaching at New Brockton Elementary School through the 2002-2003 school year.  I came to Elba City Schools at the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year and have been happily teaching here ever since.  This year starts number year 35 for me as a teacher!  My goal is to continue to search for strategies to help each student I work with to reach their goals towards being happy, positive, and productive individuals in their communities.  I am thankful to be an educator! I strive to work as hard as possible whether I am serving one child or a class full of children.

I am slowly working towards my Master's degree in the area of Counseling/Psychometrics.

I have lived in Elba all of my life. I worship here, have my family here, and work here! I love this town and it's people!  I graduated from Elba High School in 1981.  My parents, husband Freddie, son Derick, and daughter Maisie are also graduates of Elba.  My youngest child, Ivie, is an 12th grader at Elba High School this year.  My husband passed away in 2008 of cancer when our children were 5, 17. and 22.  Derick went on to finish college and is now a part owner and operator of 2 Firehouse restaurants.  He is married to my daughter in love, Amber Burnett, who also teacher here at Elba High School, and they have 3 beautiful girls, Adley Reign, Taryn Grace, and Briar Rose.    These girls are my 1st grandchildren and they are precious!!! I am known to them and family now as Ma'Dee.  Maisie finished college as well and is now an RN. She just married her favorite person in the world, Ryan Edge in December!  Ivie will be a Senior this year!  She has big plans to attend college after she graduates high school.  For now, she enjoys Elba Tiger Band danceline, competition dance with TRIBE dance studio, and being the Elba Tiger mascot, ELBIE!

I love working at the school I graduated from.  My family and I are proud to be from Elba and to all be Elba Tigers!!!
